Day 6: May 23

I got up at 3:30 to do edits on my dissertation and then leave at 6 for Venice!

The bus driver got us there in good time, especially since a taxi made the professors late. I was happy that standing on the water taxi didn’t make me motion sick. I got some cool pictures on our way in.

Then we headed forward for a gondola ride. The ride was peaceful and almost lulled me to sleep. I bot some very information though!

  • Gondoliers are required to learn 34 different languages and the entire history of Venice
  • It takes 3-6 years to become a gondolier
  • My gondolier had been working between 23-27 years (I forget the number). He said it was a family tradition.
  • Gondaloiers speak a Venecian language—NOT a dialect.

The best part of the day thiugh was going to St. Mark’s Basilica, with zero waiting in line. It was worth the €3 + extra €5 to see the crypt of Mark the Evangelist. I was in absolute awe by the end too rhat the beautifully shiny ceilings we saw were actually created from mosaic tiles. The entire inside was beautiful. Lisa and I just stared for hald a minute sometimes, taking it in. I found it weird that the seats at the altar have speakers since the people are Right There. The Byzantine altar retable was breathtaking. The tabernacle is behind the altar and I only recognized it after Lisa pointed out a stepstool in front of it and I looked up to see the candles. And the crypt/altar area is stunning. We spent 30-45 minutes in there and since that is all we wanted to do in Venice, we were both very happy with the trip.

What was really cool is, as we got back to Reggio Emilia, a rainbow greeted us over an arch!
