Day 12: May 29

I finally got a picture of the sunrise today!


We had a language scavenger hunt today which was more fun than expected, especially after finding the visitor's center. The man there wouldn't accept gelato as a thank you. I know it's his job, but he had a bunch of Americans hound him today and he was SO helpful! It was frustrating to be told in the middle we couldn't use a bike and that everyone in the group needed to be with us when there were no rules about bikes, the undergrad groups weren't told everyone needed to be there, and there was clearly no advantage because another USC group got the last clue at the same time as us. We only didn't win because we weren't allowed to read lyrics offline of a song Tori knew but didn't know all the words of. I was taken aback when we were told that we "know at least one Italian song." Maybe I should have added that to my homework, but I don't know how I would know that if it wasn't already part of the language lessons (and silly me, I left my language lesson notes back at the host's house). 

Hey, we got far and I at least had some fun. I found a cool shop for gifts for a certain family member! :)


Tori and I spent about 4 hours in the library working on our peer reviews. It would have been more fun to go to Bologna with the undergrads and Lisa, but we got all the work done as best as we could. We didn't do it all in 4 hours--both of us got at least the first chapter done before today. I also worked this morning. I have broken Tori's paper...

Day 1: May 17-18, 2024

Buon fortuna! Or something like that. After a repack at 11:30 am (when I left the house not 2 hours later), I'm glad I checked my bag. It meant more leg room than I thought there would be and I have room to bring things home if I do anything. The flight in was easy. We left a bit early, landed a bit early; and, while I'm no expert on flying, I do know the landing was VERY smooth. We braked fast too.  I was next to/around a family with three boyos, the two parents, and grandma. The boys were so adorable. Even the crying babies on the flight weren't too bad. But I was helping the adults with the boy next to me since I was in the aisle, and mom gave me some chocolate for being patient and helpful.  I only got maybe an hour total of fitful sleep on the flight, but when we were served breakfast at 11:30 pm Eastern/5:30 am Italian time it felt like 5:30. Day 4: May 21

Otello Sarzi - Nido Scuola I was not allowed to get many pictures, but I have included a few I was able to take. Setting The first thing I noticed with the setting in this school is how no space seemed to be wasted. The walls were covered in student work and other documents, which will be later described in the Materials section. Some desks had chairs while others did not; sliding boxes could be used as a chair or a desk; reading areas had pillows or foam mats that could be moved around. All the rooms had doors with glass windows, though only one room with students had a closed door. Not only did the overall layout align with the Reggio approach ( Malaguzzi, 1993/1994; McNally & Slutsky, 2017; Wurm, 2015 ), but the educators in the school explained that it also gave students the freedom to work through different atelier activities that the students and teachers agreed on at the start of the day. Day 2: May 19

 Today was a nice day. Walked about 15 minutes to the church and we saw tons of poppies and puppies. The church is tiny and has very old seating. They are completely wooden, have no backs, and almoat no one knelt. I love that there was no bell during the consecration and it was a new experience to dip the host in white wine—which was better than the white wine my church uses! We met everyone at the train station, and I like how easy it is to buy a ticket (and get a return ticket) and validate it. The train ride was so smooth and we saw some cool art at the Modena station. We had 2 free hours in Modena, but all the grad students stuck with Drs. Gess and Miller. The closeness of everything made me think of NY or parts of Baltimore except with more color and nicer smells. We saw umbrellas hanging at times and and I stepped into St. Rita's Chureh.
